MAKE A TODDLER BUSY BOX

This Toddler Busy Box is easy to make with just a drill and a few supplies. It's portable, customizable, educational and fun!

Anyone who has spent time with a toddler knows that, above all else, they are busy little beings! Their curiosity is insatiable and anytime they can poke, pull, squeeze, twist or manipulate something, they will jump all over that opportunity. As a mother of four once-toddlers, and a current toddler teacher who spends her days with two and three year olds, I know this better than most. It is with this in mind that I created this DIY Toddler Busy Box out of a wooden box I purchased on Amazon. With some recycled yogurt pouches and caps, clothespins, twine and a few other items, I created a portable playground for tiny hands. You do not need to be particularly skilled to make this. If you can use a drill, that’s about as high-tech as this project gets. You can add to it, or leave some of the items off your box. I plan to create another with even more manipulatives since the first was such a hit with my little ones! Get creative and see what you can add to your own Busy Box. Wishing I added a zipper to this one so that’s on the list for my next box!

Supplies:

  1. Wooden Matchbox-style box like this one

  2. Drill with drill bit capable of making a hole about 1/2“ in diameter. I used a flat bottom hole Forstner drill bit. You can purchase a set at your local home improvement store and I guarantee you will find a million crafting uses for it besides this. See photo for reference. You will also need a regular drill bit for the string holes.

  3. 6 Yogurt pouches, empty and washed

  4. Painter’s tape

  5. Various string or twine, strong enough to be pulled without breaking. I used leather twine and shoe lace string cut to fit my needs

  6. Three clothespins

  7. Colored dot stickers (or paint)

  8. Paint pens (for clothespins)

  9. Matchbox track (Dollar Tree item), cut to fit top of box, plus a little car

  10. Scissors, Glue Gun, Elmers glue
